SAVING STONE TOWN
Situated off the coast of Tanzania, the island of Zanzibar features an eclectic mix of architecture in its old city, Stone Town, which is famous the world over for its coral-and-lime buildings and ornately carved wooden doors. This Swahili coastal trading town's unique history spans over more than a millennia with Arab, African, Indian and European influences. But now, after years of neglect, many of the structures are crumbling away. This project looks at how a small group of local artisans are fighting to bring back the traditional skills and knowledge needed to preserve these historic buildings.
