Sulphur mining has been taking place at the active Ijen volcano in Eastern Java since 1968, mainly for Export to China and South East Asia.The crater is a dangerous and gruelling place to work with miners having to climb up steep rocky paths carrying double their weight in Sulphur. Ijen volcano has erupted several times over the last century and contains the world largest acidic crater lake famous for its bright turquoise colour. Many miners head out to work before 2am working right through the afternoon to earn enough to put food on the table and give their children the future they never had.
